Announcing Converge - Opening MAY 2010

  

Converge (www.convergenj.com) is the official name of NJ's first Coworking space, and the first in the country to be connected to a University. We've been working under the name NJ Coworking, but we're officially announcing that we'll be opened in May of 2010 under the name Converge.

 

We're officially signing the lease on NJ's FIRST Coworking space this month. Members have already signed up and more are interested in being a part of something to monumental in NJ. Since we're just opening, we're leaving the month of May wide opened and FREE to anyone that wants to stop in and Cowork with us. May 17 - May 31 is completely wide open, so please stop by and check out the people, the space, and spend some time with us!

NJ Coworking just received the final round of approvals to occupy 5,000sf of space at Kean University in Union NJ. We'll be outfitting the space over the next month or two and are pushing for a November launch.

 

We're looking for potential members as well as people in the area that are interested in helping out with the organization and planning of the space. No meetings have been planned yet, but within the next few weeks we'll have a finalized business name and logo and will be planning a planning meeting. Anybody interested in getting together in Summit for a co-working event? Summit is an easy location for anyone on the NJTransit lines. I can coordinate a location if there is interest.

Hi all,

 

My name is Igor Alves - I have been listening in on most of the activities on the PB Wiki and the Google Groups page and I have met with a couple of coworking pioneers. I am increasingly a believer in the huge potential coworking has to transform the way people work, relate and socialize.  I have been doing market research and am currently building a business plan for a coworking space for North Jersey - most likely in the areas that are listed below - these do make the most sense.  I have also attracted some attention from potential investors though I am not ready to make a formal request yet.  I hope I will be able to in a month.  One of my main challenges involves the formation of a management team. 

 

I come from a marketing and management background - and would love to attract anyone who has logistical, financial, interior design or service experience - or who just kicks butt at whatever - anyhow - anyone interested in discussing more with me please write me at igormalves@gmail.com .   Thanks and best of luck to all!

If you got the word out, I'm sure there would be TONS of interest. Best places for CoWorking center(s) would probably be 1)Montclair (center) and 2)Morristown (center)

 

Dossy says: You think so? I'm guessing most people interested in coworking are in NYC, not NJ. I can try to get the word out, but my guess is northern NJ doesn't have enough independents to make coworking a reality.

 

Jesus says: I'd be interested in finding positive, energetic, creative people to share a dynamic working environment in North Jersey. I'm in Union which is not too far from either Morristown or Montclair. I would also consider South Orange and Maplewood (SoMa) as a possible locale. I am starting to work from home developing software but I'm looking forward to trying coworking for all its known benefits. My natural tendency was to check NYC but I would definitely check out a NJ spot as well.

 

Dossy says: SoMa is ~40 minutes from me. I guess the next challenge is finding a space ... any suggestions?

 

Jeff says: I'm interested in North Jersey as well. Montclair would be ideal for me, but I'd consider SoMa. Jersey City too. Anywhere where there is some sort of town to walk in and get a decent lunch. I don't know anything about how to go about doing this, but if someone has a strong sense of how to do this, I'm definitely interested in participating.

 

Jeff: There's a commercial office building that's going to become available to lease office space from, sometime in the November 2007 timeframe, on Carey Ave. in Butler, NJ. There's offices of all different sizes in there--perhaps if a few of us go in on it together and split the rent, we could set up a Coworking space there. In the meantime, I'd be willing to open my home one or two days a week during the day (while the kids are at school--say, 9am-2pm) as a Coworking space to get us started.

 

Jose (2/20/08): I am also interested in coworking at a place anywhere near Morristown. I don't know about Butler, I don't even know where it is, but I think Morristown and Summit, or even Madison, are good areas to rent coworking space. These three towns offer good places to eat, grab lunch or coffee, and I even think they do have a lot of independent businesses and freelance folks. I also think that the three towns I mention are probably on the higher rent ranges when it comes to office space, obviously this should also be part of the space to be considered. Dossy, although you are generally correct in your statement about independents, NJ vs NYC, I know a lot of people in BR area that are independents and work out of their homes. Dossy says: Jose, there are independents everywhere working from home--but how many of them do you know who would be willing to share a co-working space? That's the challenge, here. Even I telecommute 100% and have a great home office setup, but every once in a while it would be nice to work in a space with other professionals to bounce ideas off of, get advice from, etc. As I said, I suspect most people who work from home or otherwise do not regularly work out of an office probably don't have the same desire as I do to participate in a coworking arrangement periodically. Clearly, from the activity on this wiki page and the lack of coworking community in North Jersey, it seems pretty obvious, unfortunately.

 

Dossy 2008apr28: I removed Rhona's shameless advertisement/plug as Sea Girt isn't even remotely close to Northern NJ--it's very clearly South Jersey on the shore.

I would be interested in participating in the Morristown area.

 

Dossy 2008may01: A public space might be cheaper, but not great for actually working in.  People can already use public Wi-Fi like Panera's offering now, but I think coworking is the next level up from that casual environment to a more office-like one.  For myself, I could justify $50-$100/month to co-rent an office space, but I couldn't justify the $500+/month for it all by myself.  However, if 5 or 6 other people also put in for $100/mo, we could rent a really nice space.

 

Glen (5.12.08): I am interested and will be in the Morristown area at least for the next couple of months until I find something a little more long-term in regards to living. I work from home unless I am travelling on business so it would be nice to meet some new people and add the social element to work.
