I am interested in setting up a shared office in Chicago for web workers, designers, writers and freelancers who want to share space and network with like minded folks.

Here are some of the amenities:

  • Funky loft or storefront space
  • Comfy lounge area, large tables and small cubby holes
  • Shared conference room
  • In a trendy and fun part of town
  • Located close to the El and Starbucks
  • Fast internet, print/copy/fax
  • Premium services like receptionist to answer your phone & mailing address for your business
  • There will be some anchor tenants who have reserved space as well as daily passes for short timers and walk ins

I'm looking for feedback on requested amenities, locations, etc. Please contact me and add your name to the list if you are at all interested.

As a regular at Amit Gupta's Jelly (http://jellynyc.pbwiki.com), I've realized the potential for groups of talented, creative people working in a common space. In the next 6 weeks I'm picking up my life and moving to Chicago, and I'd like to lay the groundwork for a coworking environment in the Windy City.

2 Big problems/opportunities:

  • I don't know anyone in Chicago
  • I need people smarter than I am, because let's face it...I'm an idiot.

With those in mind, my goals are as follows:

  1. Next six weeks: Begin finding out if there's any interest in something like this, make introductions, etc.
  2. August-September: Once moved in, solidify a core group (3-5 folks) to mastermind this thing, and develop a plan of action for getting it off the ground.
  3. September: Get married, go on honeymoon, leave computer at home.
  4. October: begin executing plan to make this happen.

I'm sure there's a community of folks who would like this as much as I would, so let's make it a reality. Please feel free to contact me with suggestions, advice, criticisms, connections, or large flexible loft/office spaces that have been sitting unoccupied for months that you'd like to donate (preferably with nice furniture, a pool table and a T3 line.)

http://evanstononline.com/ has a lot of office space in Evanston, and I talked with the owner and they're sympathetic to the coworking idea.

I think that something could be negociated pretty easily. If anybody is interested, I'll be at BarCamp the weekend of the 15th of July http://barcampchicago.com/ and available to discuss ideas.
